Honda Sensing

Honda has added a new group of safety features to its list of available features for the Honda vehicle lineup. This group of features is called *Honda Sensing, with the idea of the vehicle sensing where you are on the road as well as obstacles and other vehicles. These new features help drivers avoid collisions and keep drivers on the road if they happen to stray from their lane.

The Honda Sensing option also helped to earn a 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating for the 2016 Honda Pilot. This suite of collective technologies have proven themselves effective in making drivers aware of things they might normally miss in order to avoid accidents or, or at the very least, mitigate the severity of them.

Staying on The Road

There are three specific features designed to help keep drivers in their lane or on the road. These are Lane Departure Warning, the Lane Keeping Assist System and Road Departure Mitigation. Lane Departure Warning lets you know when you have strayed from the lane lines without using a blinker by flashing an icon and also using sound to bring this to your attention.

Lane Keeping Assist and Road Departure Mitigation work similarly in the way that they sense if you are slowly straying from your lane or the road altogether. In response, the two features will slightly correct your steering. Road departure warning works with speeds between 45-90 mph and will first give you a warning by sending a vibration through the steering wheel.

Looking Ahead

Similarly to straying from the road, Honda Sensing offers three features to help avoid or mitigate an accident with objects or vehicles in front of you. This consists of Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning and the Collision Mitigation Braking System. Adaptive Cruise Control is similar to cruise control, but rather than having to disengage when you approach a slower vehicle, the system does it for you and brings you back up to your original speed when the other vehicle is no longer in front of you.

Forward Collision Warning and the Collision Mitigation Braking system work together to help avoid forward collisions. The warning system uses a camera to watch out for vehicles in front of you, if it senses that you are in danger of striking the vehicle in front of you it will notify you with audio and visual warnings. If you continue to get closer to the vehicle the Collision Mitigation Braking System will take over and apply the brakes in order to avoid the collision or at least lessen the impact.
