How to Check Tire Tread Depth

Perhaps you’ve noticed the tires on your Honda are getting bald, but you’re trying to get more miles out of them before you buy a new set. Do you know how to check tire tread depth and what is a safe amount of tread? If not, Planet Honda in Golden can help! We are your best tire resource and are always at your service. Look around and find yourself a penny, and you won’t have to ask again, “How do I check tire tread wear?” Follow these simple steps to check your tire tread depth.

What is a Safe Tire Tread Depth?

A safe tire tread depth depends on the type of tire. New tires typically have tread depths between 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch. However, heavy-duty tires used for off-roading around Denver or used during winter driving conditions have much deeper tread grooves to provide better traction. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), a safe tire tread depth is typically about 2/32 of an inch or more. If your tires are less than that, you need a new set of tires. Contact the parts department or service center at Planet Honda to immediately order your new tires.

How to Use a Penny to Check Your Tire Tread Wear

If you’ve ever asked, “How do I check tire tread wear?” read on. Use your penny to check your tires’ tread depths, or you can even use a ruler if you can’t find a penny. When you have a penny in hand, follow these simple step

  1. Place your penny between the tread grooves on your tires. Turn the penny so that President Lincoln’s head is pointing towards the ground.
  2. Look at how much of Lincoln’s head is covered up by the grooves of your tires.
  3. If you can see all of Lincoln’s face, the tread on that tire is below or at 2/32 of an inch, and it is time to replace it.
  4. Check the tire tread depth the same way on all four of your Honda tires.
