How to Jump Start a Car

Jumper Cables on battery

Can’t get your car to start? All you may need is a quick jump start to get back on Denver roads. Rather than calling a jumpstart car service such as AAA, it’s often easier to just jump start the vehicle yourself. Follow the steps in this guide from the service team at Planet Honda to learn how to properly jump start a car.

The Proper Way to Jump Start a Car

Why wait around for a jump start car service to show up? All you need is a set of jumper cables and a friend that has a vehicle with a fully charged battery, and you can jump start the car yourself. Just follow these steps:

  1. The car with the good battery should be parked facing the car with the dead battery. Turn off the engine and make sure that the parking brakes on both vehicles are engaged.
  2. Open hoods of both cars and find the batteries. There may be plastic coverings over the battery terminals that you will need to remove.
  3. Locate the positive and negative terminals, and check them to make sure that they are clean and free of any corrosion.
  4. Attach the red clamp to the positive (+) post on the dead battery.
  5. Attach the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the battery with the charge.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative (-) post on the good battery.
  7. Attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the frame of the car with the dead battery.
  8. Check to confirm that the clamps are secure, and start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery. Then, start the one with the dead battery.
  9. Once the car has been jump-started, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on.
  10. You should keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 to 15 minutes to ensure that the battery is fully recharged. Your owner’s manual may have more information on recommended recharging times.

More Battery Tips and Tricks

What if my car won’t jump start? It could be that the battery is dead and needs to be replaced, or it may be a sign of another issue with the electrical system. Try these troubleshooting tips to determine why the vehicle doesn’t jump start:

  • If you hear a clicking sound when you turn the key, it could mean that the starter isn’t functioning. Schedule a service appointment at Planet Honda to have our service experts check the starter and install a new one if needed.
  • If the electrical systems of the car come on when you turn the key, but the engine won’t turn over, there could be a problem with the ignition switch, battery, starter, or a fuse. The best thing to do is to have the vehicle towed to our Service Center, where our skilled technicians can diagnose exactly what the problem is.
  • Remember that once you have successfully jump-started your car, you should keep it running for 10 to 15 minutes in order for the battery to fully recharge.
