How to Reset Oil Life on a Honda Civic

Oil Change Banner

If the Engine Oil Indicator in your Honda Civic continues to show a low level after you’ve added or changed the oil, follow these steps to reset the oil light.

  1. Turn the key in the ignition to the “On” position, but don’t start the engine.
  2. Press “Menu” on the left-hand-side steering wheel-mounted controls. The menu screen will then appear on your display.
  3. Use (+) to choose Vehicle Information, then press the “SOURCE” button.
  4. Press “SOURCE” once more to access the Maintenance screen. You’ll see the engine oil life on the i-MID (intelligent Multi-Information Display).
  5. Use (-) to indicate “Yes,” and then press “SOURCE”.
  6. Turn off the ignition and start the engine to make sure the reset worked.

The oil light usually will have to be reset whenever you change your oil. At the Planet Honda Service Center, our certified technicians reset the oil light as a routine part of the service.

What Factors Impact Oil Life in My Civic?

Such things as engine load and temperature, the distance driven in miles and hours, and the speed at which you drive on the roads in and around Lakewood can all affect your car’s oil life. If you notice that your Honda Civic oil light comes on before your regularly scheduled oil change, it can mean that the Honda Maintenance Minder™ System has detected a low oil level, which could be due to the oil breaking down more quickly than expected. In this case, it is important that you schedule an appointment at our Service Center near Denver as soon as possible.
